568 - Charters Towers

Charters Towers post office, 108 km south west of Townsville. The numeral 568 duplex canceller with 24 broken (3 segment) rays was used as a replacement canceller from December 1898 - February 1904

FORGERY: 568 with 23 rays and a different slanted top of the numeral 6 is a forgery. It is also missing the datestamp component and is usually on a large chalon or high value fiscal or sideface issue. Examples can be seen here
